“Queen of Tears”(눈물의 여왕) And Its Filming Locations With the Story Of Kim Soo-hyun
People are enthusiastic about love stories, especially those that involve overcoming obstacles. The Korean drama “Queen of Tears” has already garnered attention simply because it features actor Kim Soo-hyun, known for his portrayal of characters in love stories. As the drama unfolded, it exceeded expectations and became even more of a focal point of interest and discussion.
This was because the story of “Queen of Tears” was quite different from traditional love stories. Korean culture still retains patriarchal elements, often depicting male protagonists as the sons of conglomerate families and female protagonists as beautiful and bright but poor women who fall in love with each other despite family opposition and eventually succeed in marriage after overcoming various obstacles.
However, this drama takes a different approach. The female protagonist is the daughter of a conglomerate family, while the male protagonist comes from a rural village. They fall in love with each other, and the man struggles to adapt to his new family. Furthermore, the drama takes a new turn as Kim Soo-hyun’s character decides to divorce upon learning that his wife has a terminal illness.
The cleverness of the writer, who defies people’s expectations, and Kim Soo-hyun’s performance are gradually making the drama, “Queen of Tears” center of attention.
Interestingly, this drama does not end with a simple happy ending but concludes with a scene implying a reunion after death between Hyun-woo, now with white hair, reminiscing about Hae-in. It’s a touching scene that allows us to contemplate the panorama of our lives for a moment, spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Another interesting point of this drama is that the first and last filming location was in Germany. By starting and ending the drama in Germany it feels comes to us ever than before.
Actor Kim Soo-hyun also sang the single “Way Home”, which accompanied this final scene. This was Kim Soo-hyun’s first time singing an OST for a K-drama in ten years, following his appearance on the My Love From The Star OST with the single “If I” in 2014.

The choice of the Mondrian Hotel, renowned for its chic design and vibrant atmosphere, as the filming location adds a layer of sophistication and intrigue. The Rumpus Room, in particular, is celebrated for its intimate setting and stylish decor, making it an ideal backdrop for such a scene.

Nowadays, with the spread of city gas, most homes in Korea are heated with city gas.

Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Aston House, the Filming Location of Queen of Tears
Moreover, the location where the protagonists of the drama get married is also a topic of discussion. The scene where their wedding takes place surrounded by flowers outdoors at a hotel is briefly shown. This place is the ‘Aston House’ at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul. Located on the foothills of Achasan Mountain, it has a private outdoor garden setting. With a view of the Han River from the outdoor venue, it is a beautiful place, especially at sunset. It is said that Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin, the main couple of “Crash Landing on You,” had their wedding here in the afternoon.
This place is a popular wedding venue among famous celebrities and dignitaries. In addition to them, other celebrity couples, such as the actor Bae Yong-joon(배용준) and actress Park Soo-jin(박수진), Ji Sung (지성) and Lee Bo-young(이보영), Sean(션) and Jung Hye-young(정혜영), Shim Eun-ha(심은하) and Ji Sang-wook(지상욱), and Kim Hee-sun(김희선)and Park Ju-young(박주영), as well as SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won’s daughter, have held their weddings here.
It is known that the cost of a wedding, including rental fees and food expenses, amounts to approximately 150 million won for 150 guests. It boasts a view overlooking the Han River and sits nestled against the foothills of Achasan, offering significant security advantages.
Therefore, there are constantly stories circulating that the characters in the drama were created based on real people. However, since everyone’s life is like their own drama, it seems reasonable to think that every drama is also a story of reality.

Relics of Repatriation Exhibition
These are the Joseon Middle Dynasty statues, lanterns, and stele pedestals repatriated from Japan in 2019. They were donated by the Ojawa family and were purchased through an auction by Mr. Yoshii Egeizo, the great-grandfather of the Ojawa family, in 1927.
In front of the tombs during the Joseon Dynasty, a statue of a general in the form of a military official was installed to guard the tomb. The general statue is characterized by wearing a helmet, wearing armor, and holding a sword on the ground.
The lantern illuminates day and night in the tomb area, and it is a lighting lantern that illuminates the path of the Gureum Gang, guiding the deceased who has left for the afterlife from the dark and rugged road. It is a symbol of filial piety as an everlasting guiding light.
- The relics of repatriation have been moved to the outdoor exhibition area.
Dongja Hall Exhibition
Dongja statues, which show up in Buddhism and Confucianism, have various looks and roles, from guarding graves to protecting villages. They mix elements from different beliefs like Taoism and shamanism too. Made between the 16th and mid-18th centuries mainly around Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, these statues were placed in royal and noble graves.
These statues typically feature a child in heavenly clothes, holding a fan or another object, adding a touch of life to solemn graves. While they started off vibrant like Buddhist statues, over time, they became more refined and similar to Confucian statues. By the 17th century, Dongja stones started blending with scholar stones, losing some of their unique traits.
Buksoo Hall Exhibition
Back in the day, folks thought that having a Buksoo statue by the village entrance or along the road would scare off bad spirits or demons with diseases, keeping them out of the village. People also believed these statues could block bad luck and bring good fortune, so they’d often pray to the village’s Buksoo for both big and small wishes.
In places like Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do, “Buksoo” refers to what’s known as a Jangseung, basically a wooden or stone pole meant to keep evil spirits away. You can find them in wood or stone, but while wooden ones can get damaged and change over time, stone ones last forever and can be pretty fancy.
The idea was, if you put up one of these Jangseung with a human face at the village’s entrance, it would keep evil spirits or disease-bringing demons from coming in.

Nearby Attractions Of the Stone Art Museum
After finishing our visit to the Old Stone Museum, there is the former house of ‘Choi Soon-woo’ nearby.
The ‘Choi Soon-woo’s former house’ is where Mr. Choi Soon-woo, also known as Hye-gok, lived from 1976, after he resigned as a museum director, until the year of his passing in 1984. It was built in the early 1930s and is a typical modern house of that time. It was almost demolished during a period when Korean traditional houses (Hanok) were being converted into Western-style houses (Yangok), but it was preserved as the first Citizen’s Cultural Heritage in 2002 through donations from citizens. It is deeply meaningful as a house saved by the power of the citizens, and it feels different from other cultural heritages as it represents the living heritage of the old Seoul citizens.
It was here that Choi Soon-woo wrote “Leaning on the Baehulrim Columns of Muryangsujeon.” The house, including a small garden, is a modest space but thoroughly constructed with an ‘L’-shaped inner house and a backyard to explore. In the backyard, there are stones engraved with the names of the donors who helped preserve this place with their donations and support in 2002. Since its official opening to the public in 2004, the ‘Choi Soon-woo’s former house’ has been hosting various cultural and art education programs such as exhibitions, concerts, lectures, and cultural experiences to commemorate the spirit of Mr. Choi Soon-woo, who devoted his life to finding and promoting the beauty of our culture.
After finishing the visit to ‘Choi Soon-woo’s former house’ and taking a short break, we move on to visit ‘Seonjamdanji‘ nearby. ‘Seonjamdanji’ is an altar established during the reign of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty to pray for obtaining good silk from healthy silkworms. At the ‘Seonjam Museum,’ visitors can not only experience various kinds of silk but also watch the ‘Seonjamje’ ceremony through 3D videos.
In addition, in Seongbuk-dong, there is the ‘Korea Furniture Museum‘ that exhibits traditional Korean wooden furniture worth visiting, and Seongbuk-gu itself feels like a living museum of Seoul.

What was it about Kim Soo-hyun, the lead actor of “Queen Of Tears”, that made him so beloved? The answer lies in a story as captivating as the dramas he starred in.
Once upon a time, in the early days of Kim Soo-hyun’s career, there was a young boy who dreamed of stars—not the celestial bodies that twinkle in the night sky, but the stars that shone brightly on the silver screen. From a young age, Kim Soo-hyun was mesmerized by the world of acting, but his journey to stardom was anything but easy. He was shy, introverted, and struggled with speech difficulties, making the dream of becoming an actor seem distant.
However, his story is a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. He enrolled in acting classes and tirelessly honed his craft, transforming his weaknesses into his strengths. His breakthrough came with the drama “Dream High,” where he portrayed a student dreaming of becoming a world-renowned singer. The role resonated with many, not just for the character’s aspirations but for the parallel struggles Kim Soo-hyun faced and overcame in real life.
But it was his role in “My Love from the Star” that catapulted him into international stardom. Portraying an alien who falls in love with a famous actress, he captivated audiences with his impeccable acting, endearing charm, and undeniable good looks. The drama was a massive hit, not just in Korea but across Asia and beyond, making Kim Soo-hyun a household name.
What truly endears Kim Soo-hyun to his fans, however, is not just his acting talent or his handsome face. It’s his humility, his dedication to his craft, and his genuine gratitude towards his fans. Despite his fame, he remains grounded, often expressing his appreciation for the support he receives. His off-screen persona, characterized by kindness and a down-to-earth attitude, contrasts sharply with the larger-than-life characters he portrays, making him all the more relatable and beloved.
Moreover, his choice of roles demonstrates his versatility as an actor. From the stoic king in “The Moon Embracing the Sun” to the endearing alien in “My Love from the Star,” and the complex characters in “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” he has shown an incredible range, bringing depth and nuance to each character he plays.
And in the drama “Queen Of Tears,” Kim Soo-hyun makes one feel the depth of those emotions just through his eyes. Even in the scene where Baek Hyun-woo checks on Hong Hae-in, who is sleeping, before going to work, without a single line of dialogue, it is Kim Soo-hyun who delivers a sense of affection and excitement.
In essence, his appeal lies in his extraordinary journey from a shy boy with a dream to a celebrated actor who touches the hearts of many. His story inspires, his talent captivates, and his humility endears. It’s no wonder why people around the world love Kim Soo-hyun—he’s not just an actor; he’s a beacon of hope, a symbol of what can be achieved with perseverance, and a reminder of the power of dreams.
