“Marry My Husband” and its Filming Locations

The K-Drama ‘Marry My Husband’ is based on a popular work that was serialized into a webtoon, originally a contemporary romance web novel by author Seong Sojak. In Korea, it’s colloquially known as a ‘makjang drama(막장 드라마),extreme drama’ which is controversial these days.

The plot revolves around the protagonist, Kang Ji-won, who witnesses her best friend Jeong Su-min and her husband Park Min-hwan having an affair. After being killed by her husband, she travels back 10 years in time to seek revenge with the help of Yoo Ji-hyuk, a colleague from the same department.

The uniqueness of this drama “Marry My Husband”lies in its structure of betrayal and revenge, with the protagonist returning to 10 years prior after being murdered. Now, let’s explore some interesting features and filming locations of this drama.

Differences between the Original Webtoon and the Drama”Marry My Husband”

The overall plot is the same. However, the timing of events differs. For example, in the original, Kang Ji-won comes back to life in 2009, but in the drama, this happens in 2013. Also, Kang Ji-won’s age is different; he is 27 in the original and 31 in the drama. Additionally, both the webtoon and the drama end with the theme of good triumphing over evil, with Park Min-hwan dying.

In the drama, Park Min-hwan dies in a car accident after trying to sabotage a car to claim Jeong Su-min’s life insurance, while drunk.

However, in the original webtoon, Park Min-hwan dies by hitting his head on a glass table.

Dedicated to the Role: An Actress’s Dramatic Weight Loss for “Marry My Husband”

For the drama, the protagonist Park Min-young went to great lengths for the role of a terminally ill patient, reportedly losing 37 kilograms. It’s said that during the diet and filming, the actor survived on electrolyte drinks. The scenes where Park Min-young had lost 37 kilograms were filmed first, and then the actor gained back 5 kilograms two weeks later for subsequent scenes.

Heungguksa Temple

Heungguksa Temple, located in Yeosu, has been a place where the guardian spirit of the community has been enshrined since ancient times. It is said that there were so many temples around this area that even during heavy showers, one could reach Dosolam without getting wet. During the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592-1598), soldiers would make wishes at the shaking rock and build stone towers before heading off to the battlefield. For a while, this place was forgotten and left unvisited, but it was recently discovered by people again as a natural habitat with ten million royal azaleas blooming.

It’s truly a sacred place. Therefore, it’s a popular spot not only for Buddhist followers but also for students as a natural learning site.

There is the Wontongjeon Hall, built in 1633, which houses a Buddha statue and is also known as the Gwaneumjeon Hall.

The Palsangjeon Pavilion houses paintings that depict eight scenes from the life of Sakyamuni Buddha.

The Eungjindang Hall is a pavilion dedicated to the direct disciples of Buddha, the Arhats.

The main hall of Heungguksa Temple enshrines the three Sakyamuni Buddhas. This place is a representative building of the Joseon Dynasty, with grand architecture and delicate carvings and molding.

There is also a stele called Jungsusa Jeokbi, which details the foundation and construction process of Heungguksa Temple.

Heungguksa is a cultural heritage area with an entrance fee of approximately 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for children.

Mimesis Art Museum in Paju

The exhibition space consists of three floors above ground and one below. It is known for its design, which encapsulates various sizes and numbers of exhibition spaces into one entity. The white exhibition spaces are made up of various curves, and the natural light that shines through creates a soft and calm atmosphere. The space changes colors throughout the day due to the natural light. The curves of the building itself are artistic, and just admiring the building’s silhouette where it meets the sky can leave you in awe.

There are also wonderful sculptures in the yard outside the exhibition hall.

Entering through the beautifully decorated stone path, you come across a cafe, which is not just any cafe but a book cafe where you can enjoy coffee or tea with reading.

The museum not only hosts exhibitions but also facilitates interviews with artists and provides time and space for discussions about the artworks.

Why “Extreme Dramas” Like”Marry My Husband”are Popular?

Many Koreans sigh at the release of another ‘extreme drama’, wondering why these kinds of dramas are made and enjoyed. However, such dramas consistently remain popular, not only now but have been for decades. This isn’t unique to Korea; in America, the famous ‘Dynasty’ has been remade and continues to gain popularity over the years. So, why do these dramas attract viewers?

  • Escapism: Many people watch dramas to escape the stress, pressure, and boredom of everyday life. Makjang dramas offer an escape through their exaggerated storylines and characters far removed from reality.
  • Curiosity and Interest: Makjang dramas often present unpredictable and sometimes unrealistic developments, stimulating viewers’ curiosity and maintaining their interest with the question, “What will happen next?”
  • Emotional Identification: Viewers emotionally identify with the characters in the drama, gaining emotional satisfaction through their experiences. Makjang dramas enhance this identification through intense emotional conflicts and dramatic events.
  • Social Comparison: People find comfort or realize their problems aren’t as severe by comparing their lives to those in the drama. The extreme situations depicted in makjang dramas can make viewers feel better about their own lives.
  • Thrill and Tension: Makjang dramas provide thrill and tension through constantly changing storylines and unexpected twists, keeping viewers engaged.
  • Sense of Community: The public interest in makjang dramas helps form communities where people share common interests, discuss stories, and feel a sense of belonging and solidarity.

These psychological factors are why makjang dramas appeal to many people. Regardless of the reason, if the drama provides even a little comfort in your life, then it has achieved its goal.
