2024 Foliage Trip in Korea
There is something that Koreans look forward to every autumn. It is the autumn foliage. When the fall colors beautifully change, we go on a foliage trip. When can we enjoy the fall foliage this year?
Late Arrival of Foliage
This year, South Korea is experiencing an unusually hot fall. The summer was sweltering, and even now, the days remain warm. After enduring such a hot summer, everyone is eagerly waiting to witness the beautiful autumn foliage. So, when can we expect to see those stunning fall colors? Every autumn, Koreans embark on leaf-peeping trips to admire the vibrant foliage, as the timing varies by region. So, where and when should you plan your autumn getaway? The answer lies with Korea’s Forest Service, which has released the 2024 Forest Foliage Prediction Map!
The Forest Service, has unveiled a prediction map detailing the peak foliage times for Korea’s iconic trees: oak, maple, and ginkgo. This map is created annually using biological seasonal data collected from the National Arboretum, nine public arboretums, and 112 observation points across the country.
So, when will the peak foliage occur this year? According to the predictions, oaks will reach their peak on October 28, maples on October 29, and ginkgos on October 31. While there may be regional variations, the foliage is expected to be slightly delayed compared to last year, with the peak for the Korean red oak anticipated to be about five days later than in the past two years.
Usually, you should visit the foliage areas a bit later than the date announced by the Korea Forest Service to see the beautiful scenery fully adorned with autumn colors, so please keep that in mind.

Interestingly, the timing of the foliage has been gradually shifting later over the past decade. On average, maples are blooming 0.39 days later, oaks 0.44 days later, and ginkgos 0.45 days later each year. This trend is attributed to an increase of about 1.3°C in average temperatures from June to August compared to the past decade. Climate change and extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall, are impacting the timing of the autumn leaves.
While this year’s foliage may arrive a bit later, this means we can enjoy the fall season for a little longer, which is great news! Traditionally, autumn in Korea has been quite short, so a delayed fall is a welcome change. As you wait for the leaves to change, get ready to soak in the autumn atmosphere! Taking photos with the colorful foliage will result in stunning captures. Some people even press beautiful leaves between the pages of books to preserve the memory of fall. Be sure to experience the breathtaking autumn colors before the season slips away!
